Heroes Weekend: Matt Monro

Born and raised in Shoreditch, Matt Monro was one of the World's finest vocalists. With Hackney lyricist and manager, Don Black, Matt Monro was the voice to countless Hollywood scores - but neither forgot their East London working class roots. In Monro's early singing career, he even kept his job as a bus driver, until persuaded by George Martin to accept a full time recording contract.

The East Ham Granada was a premier venue in the 50s and 60s, hosting acts such as Buddy Holly, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. It still stands as venue for hire in Barking Road.
